Public square, pier and island hotels reception
Rovinj
The access plateau and pier with a reception for island hotels is located at the entrance to the Monte Mulini zone in Rovinj, neighbouring the city’s swimming pool Delfin. The building with the reception and café, the square and the reconstructed roads enable a more functional traffic regulation, and form an attractive and accessible new public space.
The key feature of the building design is a white concrete brick facade that alternates between full and semi-open segments created by a specific way of stacking the brick. The facade continues as a freestanding wall, that forms a fence towards the public swimming pool. This lace-like wall creates a peep-hole effect and allows views of the pool.
The building is divided into two volumes – one glazed and the other enveloped with white bricks. The two volumes are topped with a flat overhang roof, all together they form a public passage. This opens new but familiar views toward the Old Town and the St. Eufemija church. Catering facilities are located in the glass pavilion, and the service facilities are enclosed indoors.
Within the scope there are functionally different zones - an access plateau and a pier for ships transporting guests to St. Catherine’s Island, roads that include essential pedestrian flows at the entrance to the Monte Mulini zone, and service amenities.
The plateau is designed as a public square, a space accessible to all citizens and tourists. The existing facility on the site has been reconstructed to create a new spatial attraction and raise the level of service, and the newly designed green plaza connects the area to the nearby forest around the Grand Park Hotel Rovinj and the Zlatni Rt Park Forest.
