The planned resort is located along the coastline of the island of Megalonisos, within the largely untouched Aegean Petalioi archipelago. Fragments of the island’s cultural landscape bear witness to a former, simple pastoral way of life and to the coexistence of humans with animals, plants, and natural phenomena. The architectural gestures of the project stem from modesty and respect for the landscape and its long-term preservation.

The project—its narrative rooted in Megalonisos—is shaped by the island’s natural elements: stone, sea, plants, wind, sun, and stars. Each of these elements is woven into the spatial and experiential layers of life within the resort. They become defining characteristics of the architecture, enabling a slower rhythm of living and the rediscovery of the values of everyday existence.

The island experience is carefully orchestrated through sensory encounters. Upon arrival, the first impression is not a building, but the scent of lavender and the sound of wind and waves. The architecture of the entrance pavilion opens the space to natural experiences: its circular atrium is a Mediterranean garden. It is a place of rest after a long journey, far from everyday routines, and an introduction to calm and renewal.

Mitato is a traditional Greek shepherd’s shelter built from gathered stone. This simple structure inspired the form and atmosphere of the resort’s accommodation units—contemporary villas and residences. Each unit is immersed in an olive grove, with sea views and concealed gardens and atriums that allow for intimate moments. Interior and exterior spaces exist in dialogue and are of equal importance.

Sustainability is not an addition, but a fundamental principle of the project. Local stone and wood form the basis of construction, alongside principles of vernacular housing, rainwater harvesting, and natural ventilation and cooling. The landscape is shaped by native plant species such as carob trees, citrus, and cypress, while animals—donkeys and bees—are an active part of a biodiverse and sustainable ecosystem.

Six Senses Megalonisos offers more than a luxurious stay. Architecture acts as a quiet backdrop, allowing the ease of life in the Mediterranean landscape to become the main protagonist. Luxury here does not arise from opulence, but from closeness to nature, privacy, a ripe fig or donkey-milk cheese, a view of the endless blue of the sea, or the stars on a clear summer night. Guests leave with the feeling that they did not merely visit the island—they belonged to it.
