The redevelopment of the Grignano port is based on the concept of a highly functional open pedestrian space with multiple different urban areas. The intention was to redefine vehicle traffic and parking, to improve accessibility and functionality of existing facilities and to establish closer links with Miramare Castle and Miramare Park.
To make an accent on pedestrian use and pedestrian connections, the whole area is a single pedestrian zone where vehicle traffic is given a secondary role and pedestrians are given a more prominent role in the forefront. The degradation of the dominant constraint of motor vehicle traffic improves the accessibility and mobility for pedestrians, enhances the attractiveness of public spaces and increases the circulation of people together with business activities in the area.

Preservation of existing trees and the introduction of a new green island flexible and adaptable in use, was another key element for this project. With this, the Grignano port becomes an extension of the Miramar Park and creates a new, more natural character of the entire area. Apart from that, it accommodates different urban furniture forms which allow people to use public space more and create a unique character that will make people remember the place and initiate a desire to come back in the future.

In order to make a harmonious relationship with the context, two main pavement options were chosen: durable natural stone “Kirmenjak” and exposed aggregate concrete. Kirmenjak is a famous architectural building stone from Istria also known as: Orsera, Pietra d´Istria, Pietra d´Rovigo, Lake flower, Istrian flower, Giallo venato d´Orsera, Bianco-giallastro di Parenzo or Avorio. The use of these two materials and taking advantage of their quality properties also helps in dealing with very present rooting problems and the destruction of the surface layers.

Part of the project is a panoramic elevator that will connect the waterfront with the park, creating an uninterrupted promenade and providing an unforgettable experience of staying in the nature and historical heritage of this beautiful area.
