Construction of the future Žabica Bus Terminal is progressing according to schedule. The first and most technically demanding phase—deep foundation work on reclaimed land in the Port of Rijeka—has been completed.
The project, which began in December 2023, includes the construction of a modern bus terminal with 14 platforms, a public garage with approximately 900 parking spaces (150 of which will be reserved for local residents), as well as commercial and office spaces covering around 8,000 m² of gross area. In the first phase, 363 foundation piles were installed, with a total length of 4,300 meters. Around 2,700 m³ of concrete and 549,000 kilograms of reinforcement steel were used. Prior to the foundation work, old warehouses were demolished and all utility installations were relocated. The entire process also included the complex protection of the excavation site.
The second phase is currently underway, involving the construction of the building’s concrete structure. According to the construction schedule, installation of the steel load-bearing structure is expected to begin in mid-June.
The opening of the Zapadna Žabica Complex is anticipated in the first quarter of 2026. Upon completion, Rijeka will gain the most modern and best-equipped bus terminal in Croatia, along with one of the country’s largest public parking garages. The project also marks the beginning of a broader urban transformation of the city center, including the redevelopment of Žabica Square as a new public urban space.
